A chance to reflect

As I look back on my 11 years as a consultant, I am taking a look back, and sharing some big picture insights with you about your journey ahead.

As a high school student in New York in the 80’s, I got little help with my career planning or choosing or applying to college, and most of my peers who graduated high school at that time would agree. We wrestled with some fairly typical questions about what to study and where, which would be the “right” choices, who to ask for help, and even what questions to ask! And, like many, I have found my way by process of elimination, trial and error, and bits of self-discovery along the way. (A bit of a boost early on would have been helpful in navigating the twists and turns!)

I thought I might want to be a Psychologist….maybe a neuropsychologist or a School Psychologist, I considered the practical aspects, the work environments, and most importantly what kinds of things I really actually enjoyed doing. That is one of the keys to finding direction. For me, on top of the list, was the sense of being able to guide someone and have a positive impact, to mentor, to teach, to support and counsel. And I began to realize this can take a lot of forms. At this stage in my career, my degrees in Psychology and Counselling Psychology and my experiences in teaching, writing, counselling, advising, admissions and administration in educational settings combine to prepare me for work as an independent consultant. I take on this challenge daily, with interest, and some gratitude – as well as a share of questioning and revisiting, as no job is perfect. However, anchored in my personal values, having had the opportunity to influence the direction of others’ lives has brought me a sense of purpose, and joy and hope to me and to others.

So, as I continue as an independent educational consultant, working with students and their families, I enjoy this sense of purpose and appreciate the returns on the investment of my time and energy. I extend an invitation to you to connect with me, to help you unearth the personal values that will serve as a compass for you, to help you learn to be your own self-advocate, to help you identify important questions and find the right sources for answers. And to share in the joy and pride when you clarify the best next steps on your way to finding your life purpose.

Looking Forward
